The local Kikuyu believe that Mt Kenya is home to the Supreme Being - Ngai. The mountain is known as Kere Nyaga - Mountain of Brightness, and people living on its slopes always position their houses to face towards this sacred peak.

When a German missionary reported a snow-capped mountain 10 miles south of the equator in 1833, nobody believed him. It wasn't until 1849 that its existence was confirmed, and then another 50 years before the 16,900-foot summit was conquered.
