There are 240 species of birds at Mt. Elgon. Colourful, noisy parrots, turaco's and hornbills inhabit the lower forest canopies. Uncommon lammergeier bearded vultures reside on high inaccessible cliffs and soar at great heights.
Elephant Caves of Mt. Elgon
To add sodium to their diets, elephants use their tusks to dig up salt deposits in several caves on Mt. Elgon. Of the 4 main caves open to visitors, Kitum is the most likely one in which to see elephants and Mackingeny cave has a splendid waterfall.
Mt. Elgon National Park
A park ranger accompanies you when hiking the lower forested slopes of Mt. Elgon and when visiting the caves (for which they may be a charge). A trekking guide is also essential when hiking the higher slopes.
