Reserves of the Northern Frontier

SAMBURU, SHABA & BUFFALO SPRINGS are in Kenya's northern frontier country, where battles between established and new forces occurred. In this case it is was the British trying to stop strife between the fierce north Kenyan tribes of Samburu, Rendille, Turkana and Borana. Once their differences were resolved, the areas around Samburu, Shaba and Buffalo Springs National Reserves, became dominated by the colourful Samburu tribe.

They closely resemble their cousins - the Maasai - and also wear scarlet robes and masses of beaded jewellery. The three reserves all lie along the Uaso Nyiro River or 'River of Brown Water' in Samburu, which aptly describes this essential water source in such an arid area.
