Standing on the edge of a starkly beautiful and rugged landscape, Samburu National Reserve draws wildlife to its palm fringed rivers and is home to endangered and rare animals.
Samburu National Reserve is sanctuary for the endangered Gravys Zebra, seldom seen Beisa Oryx and another creature called the Blue-Shanked Somali Ostrich. In the endless grasslands Lion hunt and on the red, dusty plains Elephant follow paths through the barren hills, returning in the evenings to the river.
Rhino has unfortunately been poached out, but Cheetah and sometimes Leopard can be seen. Giraffe and Buffalo are also present as well as Crocodile. This area is also home to the Samburu tribe, who are an offshoot of the Maasai tribe.
The lifeblood of this reserve is the Uaso Nyiro River which flows through it, providing water and life to many animals drawn to the riverine woodland, there is prolific birdlife including the Marshal Eagle, Pygmy Falcon, Hornbill and also Egyptian Geese.
